Take Control of Your Life

People spend their lives dreaming of the day when they will finally be in control of their own destiny.  As children they dream of the day they get to tie their own shoelaces and choose their own food. As young teenagers they dream of the freedom of having their own car and as older teens they dream of being out on their own or going to college. But when they get to college the dream shifts to having a job, their own money, etc.

Unfortuantely, the job doesn’t bring freedom either. You still have a boss, deadlines, and people telling you what to do. So perhaps the dream shifts toward being your own boss, having your own business or the day you are eligable for retirement.  But it is a long way from college graduation to retirement. And that is no way to live the majority of your life… waiting for the day when you can sit back and do as you please. In today’s article Jason Leister shows us the importance of “Standing Up” and taking responsibility for our own lives in the here and now and not just shifting responsibility off onto our parents, teachers, professors, boss, doctor, or government.  Take control of your life… you’ll be glad you did.  Tim McMahon~editor

The Power of “Standing Up”

By Jason Leister
Almost 3 years ago, I started on the path towards accepting responsibility for everything that happens in my life. I was hardly living my “best life” at the time and the repercussions of that were really starting to be a drag.

If you feel like you’re going through your life, doing your best to deal with what the world is “dishing out to you,” then you know what I’m talking about. It’s a terrible feeling.

The good news is that you can change that. The bad news is that only you can change that. Continue reading

A Career is a Series of Comebacks.  — Rick Nelson

By Dr. Gary S. Goodman

Dominick Dunne, the celebrated Vanity Fair essayist and fighter for crime victims’ rights, just died at age 83. I was reading his obituary that recalled his life as a successful and then fallen Hollywood producer.

Before turning to journalism after the tragic murder of his daughter, his fortunes were so bad that he “sold his dog.” I have seen many homeless folks that still have their trusty canine pals sitting next to them, so I can only imagine how low Mr. Dunne sank Continue reading

Why Work if You Don’t Have To?

By Alexander Green

I recently bumped into an old acquaintance I hadn’t seen in years. Are you still managing money? he asked.

“No, I write investment advice now,” I said.

“Well, it must not be panning out too well,” he said with a wink, “or you wouldn’t still be working!”

I’ve heard variations of this line over the years. And while it’s always offered in jest, it hints at a particular mindset:

Why would anyone continue to work if he didn’t have to?

Yet I’d be bored to death without a job — and even more of a pain in the neck to everyone around me, I’m sure. (Warren Buffett and Bill Gates — two gentlemen who have a few dollars — apparently feel the same way.) Continue reading

Your Beliefs Are Your Destiny

By David Batchelor

Belief is a feeling of certainty – but being certain of what?

Being certain of possibilities.

When we believe something, what we really believe is that that thing is possible. Life after death… a cure for cancer or Lupus or AIDS… success in any endeavor… we either believe it’s possible or we do not. “Impossibility” might simply be defined as “the absence of positive belief.” Continue reading

What’s the point?

By David Batchelor

Each day for five or six days a week you come to work. Perhaps you come to work in your own business or maybe you are working for someone else. Either way, you are investing a lot of time and energy helping this business to succeed. Why should it?

I am really asking you if you know the purpose of your business: it’s reason for being? Do not confuse purpose with goals and business strategy. A purpose is long-lasting because it is never fully attainable. Continue reading
