Toyota Corolla

A fuel efficient car that has been around for quite awhile is the Toyota Corolla. Even though the Corolla is well known as a reliable vehicle, it has received numerous improvements over the last few years. Due to the fact that the Corolla has been around so long and works so well, most of the upgrades are limited to design improvements and enhanced amenities in the interior. Of course, the running gear continues to improve as well, which keeps the Corolla among the most sought after fuel efficient cars that sell for less than $20,000.

Volkswagen Golf

Another perennial favorite is the Volkswagen Golf. It has been redesigned to keep up with the competition, and Volkswagen hopes the new Golf will continue to be a good seller. The sleeker-looking Golf also has many improvements on the interior. It continues to get great gas mileage, as well. The newest version of the Golf has a lighter frame, which helps improve fuel efficiency.

KIA offers a long-term warranty on the Optima, and its safety features are as good as anything on the market. It is a great value, because the base price is below comparably-sized cars. The highway fuel efficiency, which tops out at 35 mpg, is a benefit for a car designed to carry full-sized adults in comfort.

Subaru Impreza

Another car that is somewhat larger than a subcompact, yet sells for less than $20,000 and gets good gas mileage, is the Subaru Impreza. With its all-wheel drive system and 4-cylinder engine, the Impreza cruises along the highway smoothly and provides impressive fuel efficiency. It is available in 4- or 5-door body styles and has a goodly amount of storage space. As with most modern automobiles, the Impreza comes with a number of standard safety features, and there is an extensive list of available amenities to choose from.

Honda Civic

The reliable Honda Civic has been around for more than a quarter of a century. It continues to be a leader in the subcompact field. Long known for its fuel efficiency, the Civic has grown into a comfortable little car over the course of its existence. The Civic started out as a bare-bones little car whose main redeeming feature was the fact that it got good mileage. It still does, but now the Civic is quite comfortable as well. The list of amenities is lengthy, yet it is still affordable. The Civic also has a long list of technological features that make the driving experience enjoyable.
