Retiring to the Mountains: Enjoying Your Retirement

There are several schools of thought when it comes to how you should live out your retirement years. Many people dream of a simpler life, they may even dream of a “cabin in the woods”.  Of course, many would prefer that this “cabin” has all the amenities including cable and Wifi.  This can actually be a good way to downsize, cut expenses and still enjoy a comfortable retirement, if you can figure out how to accomplish it. If you’ve decided to retire to the mountains, there are things that you should still consider doing. Here are some of the best ways to live out your retirement in the mountains.

Remain Active and Engaged

If you want to be able to live a long life, you need to remain active and keep your mind engaged with the world around you. One way to get lots of exercise and fresh air is through hiking in the mountains. And if you already live there it is all the easier. Develop an exercise routine so that you can fully enjoy your retirement years.

Develop Hobbies

It can be difficult to make the transition between working full-time to being able to do what you wish all day long. Some of the best tips for helping to ease into this transition is to develop some hobbies. This could be that you take up fishing, boating, or maybe you’ve always dreamed about being a painter. Whatever it is that interests you is something that you should give a try. You want to make the most of your retirement so that you can look back with no regrets.

Spend Wisely

You have to make the transition from being a saver into becoming a spender. This can sometimes go to someone’s head if they don’t consider the implications. Plan on having at least twenty years of savings built up so that you can live out your retirement in comfort. You may want to speak to a financial planner about your goals so that you can be set for years to come.

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion.

Surround Yourself with Comfort

Different people have different goals in retirement. Some want peace and quiet. Some people want solitude. Some people want to surround themself with comfort. You don’t necessarily have to follow Henry David Thoreau’s example and live an entirely sparse existence, foregoing comforts like running water and electricity. Today, you can find luxury mountain homes for sale so that you can have the retirement that you’ve waited for your whole life. There are lots of options that are still in your price range depending on the area in which you’ve selected for your retirement home.

There are so many great places that you can decide to retire. The only thing inhibiting you may be that there’s too many places that you want to live out your life. Good luck in living the retirement that you’ve always dreamed of.
