It’s approaching that time of year when our thoughts turn to our winter wardrobes, ready for the chilly weather and most importantly – getting ready for the parties. Of course a new winter wardrobe and dresses to see you through the party season don’t come cheap – unless you DIY it!
Customizing has become the new big thing – the current economic climate Frugality  is forcing people to tighten their belts and break out the glue gun. Just like our grannies, we are following the rule of ‘Make do and mend’. The popular trend for jewel encrusted clothing, as seen on the A/W ‘12 catwalks of Balmain and Dolce & Gabbana, has inspired a lot of would be designers to come up with their own creations. Balenciaga’s clever mix of fabrics on the runway recently has inspired the would be designers out there, who are handy with a sewing machine, to mash up a couple of old outfits and create something new. Don’t worry, You don’t have to be a fashion graduate to master this skill, all that is required are some old clothes, scissors, glue gun and a bit of imagination.
Anything goes when it comes to customizing. Whether it is clothes, bags even shoes! An old top can be transformed with a gorgeous peter pan collar like the ones from juliaheartsu? Or sift through the bottom of your jewellery box and those bits of odd earrings and the necklace you have always meant to get fixed, can now be used to embellish the cuffs or collar of a dress.
Hot trends at the moment are studs and spikes, which can be easily obtained from haberdashery sections in department stores and various online outlets. There are limitless videos and blogs on the internet to help you get started and many TV fashion shows will offer hints and tips on how to make a garment your own. The best bits about customizing your own clothes are you can use whatever you want and it doesn’t have to be expensive and it is a fantastic way to make your wardrobe that little bit more environmentally friendly – Your imagination is the only limit!
So, with your ‘new’ dress and recycled shoes, Cinderella, you shall go to the ball.
