Fitness Equipment: Save Your Money, Save Your Body

Exercise is a great way to prevent stress, gain more energy, and look great. In addition to providing immediate health benefits, exercise has been shown to protect people against common conditions like high blood pressure and obesity, and can help prevent heart disease and cancer when combined with other healthy lifestyle choices.

These health benefits are a large part of why people join gyms. Gym membership provides access to a range of fitness equipment in exchange for large monthly fees and expensive contracts. However, most gym-goers use only one or two pieces of fitness equipment. Usually, they do some form of cardiovascular exercise, such as running on a treadmill or using an elliptical machine, and then follow this up with some weight-lifting exercises. When you consider that most people who pay for an expensive gym membership only to use one or two basic pieces of fitness equipment, you may begin to wonder why more people do not simply work out in the comfort of their home. Surely working out from home is more convenient. Rather than having to get in the car and travel to the gym, use public showers and dressing rooms wouldn’t it just be easier to get your own equipment?

Cost

Purchasing fitness equipment for the home is a great investment when compared to paying a monthly fee to use a gym. Most gyms require some kind of “joining fee” in addition to the monthly payments. Many force people to sign up for long contracts that are nearly impossible and very expensive to get out of early. Plus, if you decide to hire a personal trainer, there will probably be an additional charge.  Some gyms even charge for parking and the use of lockers.

Often people find that going to the gym is an expensive investment that doesn’t pay off in the long run. A simple way to combat this is to purchase home fitness equipment. This purchase is a one-time expense and can save hundreds or thousands of dollars over time. It is even possible to buy used equipment and save even more.

Time

Not only does home fitness equipment offer the same forms of exercise as a gym without the ongoing cost, it also eliminates the wasted time associated with a trip to the gym. Consider how much time is taken for a routine workout in a fitness club. First, you need to pack your clothes. Then, you drive to the gym, park, go to the locker room to change, and then it is finally time to do your hour or so of exercise. For people who shower and change at the gym, this is additional time wasted. In fact, it has been estimated that between travel, exercise and a shower, a gym-goer will spend three hours on their average trip to the gym. It is no wonder that many people become discouraged and give up on exercise. Wouldn’t it be much easier to walk across the hall and use your own equipment?

Privacy and Other Issues

Some people are also very self-conscious working out in front of other people, especially people of the opposite sex. That is one reason that “Curves” was created as a “Women Only” place to work out. But even that doesn’t totally eliminate the problem. Also, if you are extremely out of shape you may only be able to walk on a treadmill for a few minutes. It hardly seems worth the effort to drive all the way to the gym for a few minutes on the treadmill. But with your own treadmill or elliptical machine you are more likely to make the effort and get started on your way to health and fitness.
