How to Save Money on Utilities Comfortably

When money is tight, finding ways to cut back on expenses is important. For many people, one expense that could be reduced are the utility bills. When it comes to cutting back on utility bills, many people are concerned that they will also have to sacrifice their personal comfort to save money. Fortunately, there are several ways that you can cut back on utility costs without having to be uncomfortable in the process.

Home Automation

One great way that you can cut back on your utilities is by investing in a home automation system. When you upgrade your home to include a home automation system, you will have far more control over the temperature of your home and you will be able to see how much energy you are using. The home automation system could allow you to set your home temperature to the right levels based on whether you are at home or not. This can avoid over-cooling or over-heating your home when you are away.

These days, in addition to simply monitoring your homes temperature you can automate all sorts of things (called the internet of things or IoT). This includes everything from smart door locks, to lights, kitchen appliances, bluetooth devices and energy and resource saving products.

Repair Appliances

When you are looking to save money on your utility bills, one great thing that you could do is have your furnace and air conditioner serviced and repaired on a regular basis. When you hire a professional for air conditioner or furnace repair service, the professional will be able to check it out completely to make sure that it is working well and efficiently. If it is not, they will be able to make the necessary repairs. This should allow the appliances to run more efficiently, which will reduce utility bills. Some things you can do yourself include changing your home filters regularly. Generally, they should be changed every 1-3 months depending on the type of filter. Clogged filters reduce the air flow making your furnace or heat pump work harder which not only uses more energy but also shortens their life.

Control Hot Water

One of the ways that people waste money is by spending too much money on hot water. Most people end up heating their hot water in the hot water heater far too high. In fact, they will likely never even use the hottest water that is produced. Instead, you could reduce the temperature that your hot water heater produces, which will reduce energy usage. The higher the temperature differential between the outside air and the water temperature the more heat is lost (i.e. wasted).

Close Windows

If you are turning on your air conditioner or furnace, you need to make sure that your windows are closed and sealed tight. Leaving a window open will create a draft and will end up wasting a lot of money as your appliances try to compensate. They should not only be closed but actually latched. Most modern windows seal tight when latched but have an air gap when unlatched (plus it is safer to keep them latched as well).

When you are looking to save money on your utility bills, it is important that you get creative. All people have different lifestyle patterns that could be altered that will lead to a reduction in utility bills. Finding out where you can cut back and implementing changes will make a great long-term improvement.
