Surfing and the ‘surf lifestyle’ definitely isn’t cheap! With inflation rising and the brands bringing out more and more super cool goodies to entice you, one can feel the squeeze on the wallet more often than not. Working in a shop that offers surf equipment and lifestyle clothing, I’ve learned a number of techniques that can help in saving you a few dollars here and there – here are a few of my industry insider tips!
Save Money by Buying Out of Season
This is a perfect way to save you some serious cash on Surf Clothing and Equipment. During the summer months, outlets heavily reduce any stock that they have left from the previous winter. And vice-versa, during the winter months the summer stock will also be discounted to affordable rates. Although, one must be strong willed to part with money for a pair of board shorts during December or a snow jacket during July. But believe me, you will be thankful for it when you have all your seasonal items and skate shoes for half the price you would otherwise pay for them.
Sales
Many people just rely on the ‘January Sales’ to shop for discounted products as this shopping time is most heavily publicized. The majority of surf shops will have a number of ‘sales’ throughout the year. Summer sales usually kick off around August, when retailers will begin to reduce summer items that they still have large stock quantities off. One can get reduced boardies, vests and tees from the current season for a reduced rate.
Epoxy surfboards
Epoxy surfboards were once very expensive, but due to newly adopted methods of production, prices have fallen over the years. Even though they are slightly more expensive that a regular, fibre glass board, epoxy constructed boards can save you money in the long run.
These type of boards are much stronger and lighter, so may save you money on flights due to the weight. Unlike a traditional board, epoxy will not damage easily when knocked or dropped, it will also not age due to elements such as the sun and salt water, and will generally last you many more years compared with a fibre glass board.
Another great way to save on your surf board is to apply a deck grip. These range from around £15-£35 ($20-$50) but will save you buying a block of wax every time you hit the water.
Display or flawed items
Shops will generally have items that have been flawed and therefore discounted. Generally, these will only be slightly marked and will pose no extreme problems. Due to them not being perfect the store should offer a slight reduction on the initial price. Also be sure to check out whether any display items are discounted due to any imperfections.
Discount cards
Nowadays most stores offer discount for certain groups of people. If you are at College or University, be sure to ask whether the store offers discount when you present your card. NUS cards also work in some surf stores. A discount of 10% is usually applied.
Other groups include Armed Forces and OAP’s, but be sure to check.
