Apps for Home Improvement

The Research Phase

Pinterest is a free platform that most people are familiar with. It allows you to “pin” your favorite pictures and categorize them into “boards”. So during the research phase you can collect samples of pictures that inspire you. Including favorite colors, room styles etc. You can also look at other people’s favorites and get even more inspiration.

Another free app is “Houzz” which has millions of professional quality photos of home renovations to inspire your inner designer. In addition it includes articles and forums to help you actually accomplish your goals.

Homezada helps you itemize and inventory your home’s contents so you can track everything including appliances, equipment and fixtures. Using Homezada you can oversee your project from start to finish and track costs.

The Color Selection Phase

Color911 costs $5.00 and as the name implies will help you select the proper colors. You can upload pictures of things in your home and the app will suggest complementary colors. You can also upload a picture and the app will help you isolate individual colors in it and match that color.

TapPainter is an app that allows you to virtually paint your rooms so you can see what they would look like in a certain color. Once you find one that you like, it will tell you the specific mixing codes for various paint manufacturers so you can have your paint mixed to your specifications.

Getting Stuff Done

Paper & Pencil by FiftyThree allows you to make notes on photos and create and share sketches.

iHandy Level is a simple little app that allows you to turn your phone into a little level. So whether you want to straighten a picture or level a bookshelf you always will have a level handy.

Photo Measures costs $4.99 and allows you to take pictures of your room and then note the measurements directly onto the photo. So if you are building a shelf or adding cabinets you will not only have the measurements you need ready but you will know exactly what those measurements were for. No more “rough sketches” or forgetting which measurement applied to which dimension.
